The Tarsar Marsar trek explores three high-altitude lakes in the Kashmir valley; Tarsar, Marsar and Sundarsar. These lakes are also the headwaters of the river Lidder. The trek is best known for its vast grassy campsites, lovely snow-fed lakes and mountain views.

QUICK ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrive at Srinagar Airport and transfer to Aru.

Day 2: Trek to Lidderwat (11km, 5-6 hours)

Day 3: Trek to Shekwas (3360m, 6km, 5 hours)

Day 4: Trek to Tarsar Lake (3790m, 5 hours, 5km)

Day 5: Trek Sundersar (3945m, 5 hours, 5km)

Day 6: Visit Sundersar & Marsar Lakes and then descend to Homwas (7 hours, 9km)

Day 7: Trek to Aru (6 hours)

Day 1: Arrive at Srinagar Airport and transfer to Aru.

The drive is around 3.5 hours. Pahalgam is around 100 km from Srinagar and then a further 12 km is Aru Valley. Aru village has been the trailhead for some of the most fascinating treks in Kashmir. Overnight in tents.

Day 2: Trek to Lidderwat (11km, 5-6 hours)

Initially passing through a dense jungle, the trail opens into a vast meadow with the river Lidder flowing through it.

Elevation Gain: 750m

Elevation Loss: 360m

Max Altitude: 2821m

Day 3: Trek to Shekwas (3360m, 6km, 5 hours)

Walking besides the Lidder we go past the lovely Homwas meadows. Here we negotiate some boulders beyond which lies our campsite for the day.

Distance: 6km

Elevation Gain: 760m

Elevation Loss: 167m

Max Altitude: 3375m

Day 4: Trek to Tarsar Lake (3790m, 5 hours, 5km)

The trail continues to wind through boulders. Shortly after we cross the river and after a short ascent we arrive at a shepherd house. Past the meadows we reach the mesmerizing almond-shaped Tarsar Lake, our campsite for the night.

Elevation Loss: 17m

Max Altitude: 3790m

Day 5: Trek Sundersar (3945m, 5 hours, 5km)

We climb the ridge parallel to the lake which takes you to the other side of Tarsar Valley. Here you get wider view of Tarsar Lake. After a sharp descent we negotiate some boulders before entering a meadow that connects Shekhwas to Sundersar. After the meadow, a short hike will bring you to the Sundersar campsite.

Elevation Loss: 377m

Max Altitude: 3945m

Day 6: Visit Sundersar & Marsar Lakes and then descend to Homwas (7 hours, 9km)

Sudersar lake is a 30 min hike from our campsite surrounded by mountains. From here Marsar lake is another 30 min away. This is also the highest altitude on this trek. After seeing Marsar, you will take the same route back via Sundarsar lake and descend towards Homwas. The trail is through the meadow and some boulders.

Distance: 9-10 km

Elevation Gain: 304m

Elevation Loss: 1027m

Day 7: Trek to Aru (6 hours) We hike back to Aru after an early start to return to Srinagar by evening.

Distance: 13 km

Elevation Gain: 439m

Elevation Loss: 1203m
