Nestled deep in the heart of Himachal Pradesh and yet, suprisingly, the Thamsar Pass trek is one of the most scenic and culturally rich high-altitude routes in the Dhauladhar range. Connecting the remote village of Bara Bhangal with the Kangra valley, the trail winds through dense forests, alpine meadows, glacial lakes, and eventually ascends to the dramatic Thamsar Pass at 4,750 metres. This trek is ideal for experienced hikers seeking a remote and immersive Himalayan adventure. In a region still untouched by mass trekking, the Thamsar Pass becomes more than just a trek—it’s an intimate exploration of the high mountains, led by those who call them home.

Day 1: Arrive in Bir (1450 meters)

A serene town known for paragliding. Spend the day exploring local cafés and resting up for the trek ahead. Overnight in a guesthouse or camp.

Day 2: Drive to Rajgundha trailhead over Chaina Pass (2800m). Trek to Plachak (2700m, 2-3 hours).

A 90 min drive from Bir brings us to the Rajgundha the trailhead for the Thamsar Pass trek. The walk begins toward Plachak, gradually gaining altitude through lush forests and river crossings. Camp overnight in a tent at around 2,700 meters.

Day 3: Trek to Panihartu (3550 m).

This part of the trek leads you through beautiful alpine meadows, waterfalls, gentle forest trails, shepherd encampments and a boulder section along the way. The climb for Thamsar pass begins from Panihartu so it makes sense to camp there for the night. Overnight in tents.

Day 4: Trek to Bherpal (4100 meters)

We continue trekking uphill to Bherpal (4100 meters), a relatively level ground approximately a 2-hour climb above Panihartu. After setting up camphere we will climb a side valley to gain altitude and prepare (acclimatize) for the pass the following day. This extra climb will give you a head start for the ascent to Thamsar Pass the next day. The views from Bherpal are stunning, offering a great vantage point of the surrounding peaks. Camp overnight in a tent at Bherpal.

Day 5: Trek from Bherpal up to the Thamsar Pass at about 4,704 meters.

Enjoy stunning views at the pass after an early start from Bhedpal. After, return the same day to Panihartu. This is the most challenging day with a significant altitude gain and descent. Overnight in Panihartu in a tent.

Day 6: Descend all the way back to Bir.

The descent will be long but easier on the legs and you’ll get back to lower altitudes with more oxygen. Conclude the trip back in Bir for a well-deserved rest.

Day 7: Onward journey.
